About Dorothea Morgan

Dorothea Morgan Dorothea Morgan was born in Barcelona, Spain to a Spanish father and a German mother. Forced to flee Spain during the Spanish Civil War, her early schooling and art training took place in Nürnberg, Germany where she danced in the ballet corp of the Nünberg Opera.

From an early age, Dorothea had to make all of the stationery and cards for her family. In addition, because the times were so hard, she would decorate bookmarks for the Confirmation classes, wedding announcements and certificates, birth announcements and anything else that was required. To expedite these endeavors, her mother bought her a new set of colored pencils every year.

When Dorothea moved to the United States in the mid-40's, she brought this very European art medium with her and was probably the first serious artist to have a major show in ink and colored pencil. Her first show in the US was in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1947 and was completely sold out. Decades later, other artists joined her in this medium. She was one of several artists featured in the Berol Company book; Berol Pencils purchased two of her pieces.

Dorothea has not only shown in many parts of the United States, but she has guided the next generation of artists wherever she has lived. Her students have ranged in age from the very young to the very old, and several have gone on to fine arts careers of their own.

In addition to being a gifted teacher, Dorothea is also a gifted student. She has never stopped developing her talent nor stopped expanding her horizons in the field of art. She is an accomplished water colorist, oil painter, iconographer and quilter. In 1982, she received her MFA from the University of Guanajuato in Mexico, where she lived for two years and relearned her native tongue.

She has been juried into the NW Watercolor Society, the Women Painters of Washington and the NW Print Council. Due to ill health, advancing age and long distances, she has not maintained these memberships, but her art has never flagged. At Christmas time, her windows glow with galaxies of folded paper stars. She has designed intricate clothing, quilted baskets and even archival boxes to store her treasured books.

Dorothea's latest contribution was to design the first Station of the Cross for the St. Andrew's lenten art project. She has also designed and executed beautiful hangings, frontals and liturgical garments for that congregation.

At 89 years of age, Dorothea continues to be an inspiration to her family, her friends and all who meet her!
